Exercise is One of the Keys to Health

February 2024

We all know how important exercise is when it comes to our health and wellbeing. However, many people start exercising for a period of time and then stop. Or they get bored of their routine and quit. When we understand why exercise is so important, it’s easy to get motivated and stay motivated!

Moving Regularly is so Important

Our body’s are designed to move, yet we sit or lay down most of the day. We sit at work, on our commute to and from work, when we are eating, and when we are relaxing at the end of the day watching TV. And this doesn’t include the time we spend laying down when we’re sleeping.

Movement is so important because it keeps our joints mobile, and it helps to build strength in our muscles and ligaments. It also increases blood flow throughout our body, which helps deliver oxygen to all of our cells. And it helps boost our brain biochemistry to improve mood and happiness.

The Benefits of Exercise

1. Weight Loss

When you exercise, you burn calories. The more intense the activity, the more calories you burn. This helps you lose weight, and keep the weight off that you have lost.

2. Prevents Disease

Exercise helps to boost high-density lipoproteins (HDL) (the “good” cholesterol) and decrease triglycerides. This keeps your blood flowing smoothly, which lowers your risk of cardiovascular disease.

3. Boosts Your Mood

Physical activity stimulates your brain biochemistry, including serotonin and dopamine, which may leave you feeling happier, more relaxed and less anxious. Regular exercise can also boost your confidence and self-esteem when you are happier with your appearance.

4. Increases Your Energy

Exercise sends oxygen and nutrients to your tissues and helps your cardiovascular system work more efficiently. Improving the health of your heart and lungs will give you more energy to tackle your day head on.

5. Improves Your Sleep

Regular physical activity can help you fall asleep faster and get a better quality sleep. And the quality of your sleep is vital when it comes to your overall health and wellbeing.

Exercise is Great for Your Social Life

Exercising is fun! People often think that exercise means going to the gym or for a run, but that’s not true. Exercise can include individual or team sports like soccer or beach volleyball, dance classes or taking a nice hike in nature.

Physical activity can help you connect with family or friends in a fun social setting. It is also a great way to unwind after work, enjoy the outdoors or simply do activities that make you happy.

And you can mix it up as much as you like. You may want to train in the gym one day a week or six! You could go for a long walk one day, a swim the next, and then a yoga class the day after that.

Exercise doesn’t have to be strenuous or intense. And it doesn’t have to be done alone. Go for a walk with a friend or join a spin class with a group of like-minded fitness fanatics. The choice is yours!

Exercise Should Be Enjoyable

There are so many different types of exercise that you can do, so make sure you find something that you enjoy. The more you enjoy it, the more likely you are to commit to it and do it regularly. Some people prefer to exercise on their own, whilst others prefer a group setting. Do what works for you!

Recovery

One of the most important aspects of exercise is recovery. And the most important part of recovery is sleep. Your body heals and repairs itself when you are asleep. Sleep is also vital in terms of muscle building and fat loss.

Establishing a consistent night time routine will help optimise your quality of sleep. Avoid exercise and food for 2-3 hours prior to sleep, minimise screen time prior to bed, and get into bed earlier so that you wake earlier.

Another important aspect of recovery is stretching. Stretch before and after working out, as well as regularly throughout your day. Walking, swimming and yoga are also great ways to help your body recover. Focus on your recovery just as much as you focus on your exercise.
